Meet the Band
Kevin D. Ferner
Kevin got his first instrument in the 3rd grade, and right about the same time started taking everything in the house apart to see how it worked. He turned down a cello scholarship at William and Mary to instead enroll at Rhodes College in Memphis, at that point already playing drums and guitar. After his sophmore year he left college to form The Generics with fellow classmates, switching from drums to bass after the first year, and toured the country for the next 6 years. During this time the band released a single as well as an album which he co-wrote all the material for.
After the band broke up he received degrees from The University of MN. In Mnpls., Schiller International Universitӓt in Heidelberg, and The Tula Welding School. After various corporate stints which failed to hold his interest, and intermittently working as a teacher, roofer, welder, framer and renovator, he turned his hand skills to luthiery.
While learning repairs, restorations and maintenance, he simultaneously began building his own instruments from scratch. In 2009 he moved his business from Florida back to Memphis, renaming it The Memphis Guitar Spa. Kevin is an avid history buff and world traveler, and wishes he lived in the Baroque Era.
In 2013 the business was chosen as one of the finalists for the MEMShop small business incubator, and expanded from a private shop into a 2100 sq. ft. facility on historic Binghampton's Broad Avenue.
In 2015 TMGS received the first ever EDGE grant. Making a name for himself in finish work, restorations, mods, and one - off custom instruments for national as well as international artists, Kevin launched Ferner Fine Instruments in 2015.
